Tesla's Terafab: Musk Announces AI Chip Fab Launching in 7 Days
On Saturday, Elon Musk posted seven words on X that sent the semiconductor world buzzing: "Terafab Project launches in 7 days." The tweet, which racked up nearly 40,000 likes within hours, signals Tesla is preparing to formally unveil its long-discussed in-house chip fabrication initiative.
What Is Terafab?
Terafab is Tesla's proposed in-house semiconductor manufacturing facility — designed to produce the advanced AI processors that power Tesla's autonomous driving systems and Optimus humanoid robots. Musk has hinted at the concept multiple times over the past year, describing it as essential to meeting Tesla's chip demand.
"I can't see any other way to get to the volume of chips that we're looking for. So I think we're probably going to have to build a gigantic chip fab," Musk said last year. "It's got to be done."
Why Now?
Tesla currently relies on external suppliers — primarily TSMC, Samsung, and Micron — for the processors powering its AI systems. After cancelling the Dojo custom chip program, Tesla is now focused on its next-generation AI5 chip, intended for vehicles, Optimus robots, and data center deployments.
The company has said AI5 production could begin in small quantities this year, with volume production in 2027. A Terafab launch announcement would likely outline plans for eventually manufacturing these chips domestically, potentially at more than 100,000 wafer starts per month.
What "Launch" Probably Means
Building a semiconductor fab takes years. What Musk likely means by "launch in 7 days" is a formal announcement — location, timeline, design reveal, or groundbreaking — not a fully operational facility. Tesla has previously discussed Intel as a potential collaboration partner; next week's event could clarify that as well.
