Humanoid Robots Complete First Autonomous Trial Run for Beijing's April Half Marathon
Over 20 teams of humanoid robots completed the first official trial run for the 2026 Yizhuang Humanoid Robot Half Marathon in Beijing overnight on March 14โ15, testing their readiness for the April 19 race.
Going Fully Autonomous This Year
The biggest change from the inaugural 2025 event is the addition of autonomous navigation teams. Last year, robots could receive guidance or remote assistance from technicians on the sideline. In 2026, a new category of competitors must rely entirely on electronic maps and onboard decision-making systems โ no human in the loop.
This shift forces teams to solve environmental perception, real-time path planning, and endurance across a 21km urban course that has been deliberately made harder: city slopes, undulating terrain, and stretches through public parks replace the relatively flat track used previously.
The Race and the RoboBaturu Challenge
The race takes place in Beijing's E-Town district, the same venue where Tiangong Ultra won the world's first robot half marathon last year in 2 hours, 40 minutes, and 42 seconds. Robots and human athletes share the same route on April 19 but run on separated tracks for safety.
New this year is the RoboBaturu Challenge โ "baturu" means "hero" in Mongolian โ a concurrent emergency rescue event featuring 17 tasks across four categories: navigating ruins, transporting supplies, and disaster response scenarios. Ten teams will advance to the final challenge.
What to Watch For
Sunday's trial confirmed that the course and safety systems are ready. With the move to full autonomy, teams building purely on-board perception stacks will face their real test on April 19.
