Circle has launched Nanopayments on testnet, introducing a USDC payment rail built for agent-to-agent and API-level commerce where transaction sizes can fall to $0.000001.

What launched

According to Circle, Nanopayments runs on Circle Gateway and uses batched settlement so buyers sign payment authorizations offchain while Gateway later settles net positions onchain in bulk. That design removes per-transaction gas costs from the user flow and makes sub-cent transfers economically viable.

The product is built around the x402 model, where a seller can respond with an HTTP 402 Payment Required, accept a signed payment authorization, and serve the resource immediately after verifying it. Circle says the setup is meant for high-frequency machine payments rather than traditional checkout flows.

Why it matters

This is one of the clearer stablecoin pushes yet toward the so-called agentic economy. Instead of using subscriptions or prepaid balances for every service, developers can meter value directly by API call, second of compute, model access, memory usage, or data retrieval.

Circle’s docs also position Nanopayments for machine-to-machine marketplaces and streaming-value use cases, where conventional card rails are too expensive for tiny transfers. Sellers receive balances through Gateway and can later withdraw through supported blockchain paths.

If the system works as advertised beyond testnet, Circle could give USDC a more practical role in autonomous software commerce, especially for services that need instant, granular settlement without turning every tiny payment into an onchain gas problem.
