Google Begins Beta Testing Native Gemini App for Mac
Google has quietly started beta testing a dedicated Gemini app for macOS, according to Bloomberg. The move fills a noticeable gap — Mac users currently have to access Gemini through a web browser, while Anthropic and OpenAI both offer native Mac apps for Claude and ChatGPT.
Early Beta, No Release Date
Google shared the early build with select testers this week, noting that it includes only "critical features" and is not yet complete. The app's interface is reportedly similar to the existing iPhone and iPad versions of Gemini.
No public release date has been announced.
Desktop Intelligence
The most notable feature in the beta is Desktop Intelligence — a system that lets Gemini read the Mac's screen and pull content from other apps to personalize responses while in use. Code in the app describes it as allowing Gemini to "see what you see (such as screen context)" to improve the experience. This mirrors the context-aware functionality available in Claude's Mac app.
The beta can search the web, analyze uploaded documents, and maintain conversation history. Google is asking testers to evaluate content generation for images, tables, charts, video, and music.
Strategic Timing
The push for a native Mac app comes as Apple prepares to launch a new Siri chatbot in iOS 27 and macOS 27, which will rely on a Google-developed AI model. A native Gemini app for Mac strengthens Google's desktop presence ahead of that integration — and directly challenges OpenAI and Anthropic on their home turf.
