Amazon Acquires Rivr, the Stair-Climbing Delivery Robot That Moves Like a Dog on Roller Skates
Amazon has acquired Rivr, a Zurich-based robotics startup that builds autonomous delivery robots capable of climbing stairs and navigating uneven terrain. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Rivr's robot features four legs and wheels — a design its CEO Marko Bjelonic once described to TechCrunch as "a dog on roller skates." The company recently launched its second-generation model. The acquisition was first reported by The Information and confirmed by Bjelonic on LinkedIn.
In his LinkedIn post, Bjelonic said the deal would "accelerate our vision of building General Physical AI through doorstep delivery, bringing robotics and AI closer to real-world deployment at scale." An Amazon spokesperson framed it as a commitment to improving "safety outcomes and the overall delivery experience for delivery service partners."
The acquisition is a natural extension of an existing relationship. Amazon's Industrial Innovation Fund and Bezos Expeditions co-invested in Rivr's $22.2 million seed round in 2024, giving the e-commerce giant an early look at the technology. Rivr had raised $25 million in total and was last valued at approximately $100 million.
Last-Mile Robotics at Scale
The "last 100 yards" of package delivery — from a vehicle to the front door — remains one of logistics' hardest problems. Stairs, narrow paths, and varied building layouts defeat most wheeled bots. Rivr's four-legged design was specifically built for this challenge.
Rivr ran a pilot program in Austin in 2025 with Veho, a last-mile delivery company, testing the robots on real doorstep routes.
Amazon, which deployed its one millionth warehouse robot last summer, has publicly stated a goal of automating 75 percent of all its operations. Rivr gives it a credible path to tackling the final stretch of delivery — the one that still requires a human.
