OpenAI Plans to Nearly Double Workforce to 8,000 by End of 2026
OpenAI is planning an aggressive hiring push that would take its headcount from roughly 4,500 to 8,000 by the end of 2026, according to a Financial Times report citing two people with knowledge of the matter.
Where the Hires Are Going
Most of the new roles are expected to land in product development, engineering, research, and sales. The company is also ramping up recruitment for a category it calls "technical ambassadors" โ specialists focused on helping businesses make better use of OpenAI's tools.
The expansion comes despite the broader AI industry signaling that models are increasingly automating routine engineering work.
Context: Code Red and $840 Billion
OpenAI's current valuation sits at $840 billion, following a $110 billion funding round that included SoftBank and major Big Tech firms.
The hiring push traces back to an internal "code red" declared by CEO Sam Altman in December 2025, when Google's launch of Gemini 3 prompted the company to pause non-core projects and redirect teams toward accelerating core product development.
The Bigger Picture
The expansion contrasts sharply with the wave of layoffs sweeping crypto and parts of tech in early 2026, where companies like Crypto.com, Algorand, and Gemini have been cutting headcount โ often citing AI-driven productivity gains as partial justification.
For OpenAI, the calculus appears to be different: more people to build, deploy, and embed AI, not fewer.
