Grok to Power X's Full Recommendation Algorithm Next Week
X's head of product Nikita Bier announced Thursday that the platform will deploy "the full power of Grok" into its recommendation algorithm next week, calling it "the most important change we've done on X."
What's Changing
The update integrates xAI's Grok model directly into X's For You feed ranking system. According to Grok's own explanation on the platform, the change will use advanced AI reasoning to rank posts by quality and relevance, reduce spam and engagement farming, and personalize feeds more aggressively than the current system.
Bier has been making a series of rapid product changes since joining X. Earlier this week, he announced that starting Thursday, X would reweight revenue sharing payouts to give more credit for impressions from a creator's home region โ a move designed to incentivize locally relevant content and reduce gaming of US and Japanese account attention.
Why It Matters
Deploying a frontier AI model as the primary ranking layer for one of the world's largest social networks is a significant experiment. The For You feed shapes what hundreds of millions of users see daily, and using Grok to power it gives xAI direct influence over information distribution at scale.
The move also deepens the integration between Elon Musk's two most active AI bets: X as the distribution surface and xAI as the intelligence layer. Grok already appears throughout X as a search and reply assistant โ becoming the algorithm itself is a larger step.
Whether Grok improves feed quality or introduces new failure modes โ AI hallucinations, opaque ranking decisions, or political bias concerns โ remains to be seen when the rollout begins next week.
