Sony Raises PS5 Prices Globally — Up to $150 More Starting April 2
Sony has announced a global price increase for the PlayStation 5 console lineup, effective April 2, 2026. In the US, the standard PS5 rises from $549 to $649.99 (+$100), the PS5 Digital Edition from $499 to $599.99 (+$100), and the PS5 Pro from $749 to $899.99 (+$150). The PlayStation Portal remote player also increases from $199 to $249.99.
The same increases apply across major markets: Europe sees €100 hikes on all consoles, bringing the PS5 Pro to €899.99. The UK sees comparable increases in pounds.
What Sony Says
Sony's VP of Global Marketing, Isabelle Tomatis, cited "continued pressures in the global economic landscape" as the reason for the increase. No other details were provided, but analysts have pointed to AI-driven DRAM shortages — high demand for memory from AI hardware — as a contributing factor alongside general inflation and supply chain costs.
This is the third price increase for the PS5 generation, which originally launched at $399 for the digital edition in 2020.
The Broader Picture
The timing is notable: consoles historically get cheaper as a product generation matures. Instead, the PS5 generation has now seen three price increases since the original 2020 launch at $399 (Digital Edition). The PS5 Pro, which launched in late 2024, now carries a $900 US price tag — a number that would have seemed absurd for a mid-generation refresh two years ago.
The price hike comes as Sony has also been investing heavily in AI-enhanced upscaling with PSSR, which requires more expensive silicon. With the PS6 still likely years away, consumers now face premium pricing for aging hardware.
If you've been on the fence, you have until April 1 to buy at current prices.
