Google Vids Now Offers Free AI Video Generation and Custom Music for All Users
Google has quietly made one of its most capable AI video models free for everyone. As of this week, any user with a Google account can generate up to 10 AI video clips per month inside Google Vids at no cost, powered by Veo 3.1 — the same model previously reserved for paying subscribers.
What Changed
The update brings three new capabilities to Google Vids:
Free Veo 3.1 video generation: All Google accounts get 10 free 8-second, 720p video clips per month. Google AI Pro subscribers get 50, while the enterprise-tier AI Ultra plan unlocks 1,000 clips monthly.
Custom music via Lyria 3: AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can generate original soundtracks from a "vibe prompt" — no lyrics required — ranging from 30-second clips to three-minute tracks, powered by Google's Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro models.
Directable AI avatars: Users can now add customizable AI-generated presenters to their videos, giving content a consistent on-screen face without filming anyone.
The update also ships a new Chrome extension for screen recording and a direct YouTube publishing integration.
Context
Veo 3.1 had already been rolling out across YouTube Shorts, Google Photos, and the Gemini app. The Vids integration is the first time Google has brought the model into a full editing environment and made it accessible without a paid tier. The move positions Google Workspace as a direct competitor to standalone AI video tools at a time when OpenAI is reportedly pulling back from its Sora video product.
