Spotify Starts Labeling Human Artists With a New Verification Badge
Spotify is adding a Verified by Spotify badge to artist profiles as the service tries to give listeners a clearer signal about who is actually behind the music they find on the platform.
What is changing
In its April 30 announcement, Spotify said the badge will appear on artist profiles and next to artist names in search over the coming weeks. The company said verified profiles must show sustained listener engagement, remain in good standing with Spotify’s platform rules, and present signals of a real artist presence such as linked social accounts, touring activity, or merch.
Spotify also said profiles that appear to primarily represent AI-generated or AI-persona artists are not eligible for verification at launch. The company framed that as part of a broader authenticity review rather than a simple automated filter, saying human judgment will be used alongside platform data.
Why it matters
The move gives Spotify a more explicit answer to the flood of AI-made music now appearing across streaming platforms. Spotify said more than 99% of the artists listeners actively search for will be verified at launch, covering hundreds of thousands of artists, most of them independent.
The company is also testing a new artist-details section that shows milestones, release activity, and touring information. Spotify said the extra context should help listeners understand an artist’s activity even when a profile has not yet received the verification badge.
