The company's help documentation describes Instant as the fast default mode for everyday use, while harder prompts can be routed into GPT-5.5 Thinking for deeper reasoning.

According to OpenAI, GPT-5.5 Instant is aimed at common tasks such as information lookup, technical writing, translation, and step-by-step guidance. Paid users can still pick models manually, with Thinking available for more complex work and Pro reserved for the highest-capability tier.

OpenAI's help center says GPT-5.5 Instant and GPT-5.5 Thinking support the full ChatGPT tool set, including web search, file analysis, image analysis, image generation, canvas, and memory. The same article also spells out message limits by plan, suggesting the rollout is now tied directly to ChatGPT subscriptions rather than only to a limited preview.

The broader significance is distribution.
