OpenAI has started rolling out GPT-5.5 Instant as the default ChatGPT model for logged-in users, replacing GPT-5.3 Instant in the main experience and updating the API alias chat-latest at the same time.

What changed

In its launch post, OpenAI said GPT-5.5 Instant is designed to give shorter, clearer answers while improving accuracy across everyday tasks such as image analysis, STEM questions, and deciding when web search is useful. The company said internal evaluations showed 52.5% fewer hallucinated claims than GPT-5.3 Instant on high-stakes prompts in medicine, law, and finance, along with 37.3% fewer inaccurate claims on difficult conversations users had flagged for factual errors.

OpenAI's Help Center separately says GPT-5.5 Instant now powers the default Instant experience for logged-in ChatGPT users. OpenAI also said paid users will still be able to access GPT-5.3 Instant in configuration settings for three months before it is retired.

Why it matters

This is not a brand-new premium tier. It is a change to the baseline model that a huge share of ChatGPT users will encounter first. OpenAI is pairing that shift with new memory source disclosures and broader personalization from past chats, files, and connected Gmail accounts, starting on the web for Plus and Pro users.

The conservative takeaway is that the most important part of this launch is the default switch itself. If the reported accuracy gains hold up in daily use, GPT-5.5 Instant could quietly redefine what standard ChatGPT feels like for both mainstream users and developers calling chat-latest.
