Google Adds Forum Quotes and Subscriber Links to AI Search
Google is rolling out five changes to AI Mode and AI Overviews that make its AI search results look more like a gateway to the wider web instead of a self-contained answer box.
What changed
In its official announcement, Google said AI responses will now show previews from public online discussions, social media, and other firsthand sources, along with more context such as a creator name, handle, or community name. The company is also adding more inline links beside relevant passages, hover previews for those links on desktop, and a new section with suggested next reads.
A separate change highlights links from a user's linked news subscriptions inside AI Mode and AI Overviews. Google's publisher documentation says subscription linking lets readers connect paid publisher accounts to Google so subscribed content can be surfaced more clearly across Google products.
Why it matters
The update is notable because it shifts Google's AI search design toward source discovery and attribution, not just summary generation. That could help publishers, creators, and forum communities capture more traffic from AI results if people actually click through.
The more cautious takeaway is that Google has not solved the core trust problem of AI summaries. It has mainly made the provenance around those summaries more visible. For users, the practical change is simple: AI Search will now expose more of the people, communities, and websites behind the answer.
