OpenAI talent turns toward drug discovery

OpenAI researcher Miles Wang is preparing to leave the company and start an AI drug discovery company, according to TechCrunch, which cited four people familiar with his plans.

The report says Wang is discussing a roughly $200 million raise at a $2 billion valuation, with Lightspeed in talks to lead the round. Those details should still be treated as provisional: TechCrunch said the discussions are ongoing and could change before any deal is finalized.

The substance of the proposed company is more important than the valuation. TechCrunch reported that several OpenAI researchers are expected to join Wang and that the startup may focus on models for identifying new uses for existing drugs, including medicines that previously failed in trials. That would put it in a category where AI systems are being aimed at discovery workflows rather than general-purpose chat or coding tasks.

Wang's own site lists him as an OpenAI researcher on the reinforcement learning team, with interests spanning alignment, evaluations, reasoning, and science. It says his research has included AI for science, especially biology, using agents that learn online.

If the company launches as described, it would continue a pattern of frontier-model researchers forming domain-specific startups around scientific work. The open question is whether those teams can turn model capability and investor demand into repeatable drug-development results, where timelines, safety testing, and regulatory constraints remain much harder than a software product launch.
