Jesse Pollak, the creator of Coinbase's Base network, says he has shifted his focus away from the Base app and back toward the underlying chain after reassessing the project's social strategy.

In a long post on X, Pollak said Base made a two-part bet across 2024 and 2025: that builders would drive the next wave of crypto adoption, and that adoption would also come through onchain-native social experiences such as creators, content, and messaging. He wrote that the builder thesis was right, but the social thesis was "obviously the wrong bet."

Pollak said the social focus left Base behind in areas that became more important, including perpetuals, prediction markets, tokenization, and enterprise payments. He described the last several months as a period of rebuilding confidence and revisiting assumptions about whether crypto needs social to grow.

The practical change is a leadership handoff. Pollak said he has handed the Base app back to Coinbase, where Jordan Fish, better known in crypto circles as Cobie, will take it from here. CoinDesk reported the same move, noting that Fish is also the founder of Echo, which Coinbase acquired last year.

Pollak framed his own role as a return to infrastructure: building Base into a blockchain for global finance. For Base, the shift narrows attention from a consumer social surface back to chain performance, settlement, payments, and developer-facing infrastructure.
