Kraken Adds Cash-Settled Bitcoin Options
Kraken has launched cash-settled bitcoin options, adding another derivatives product as crypto exchanges try to make options trading easier for a wider set of clients.
The practical change is the contract design. CoinDesk reports that Kraken's options are linear and settled in U.S. dollars, so premiums, profit and loss, and final settlement do not require users to manage bitcoin collateral. That makes the product closer to familiar cash-settled derivatives in traditional markets than to options venues where collateral and settlement mechanics can add operational complexity.
Kraken's own options page frames the product as a Kraken Pro feature covering bitcoin and ether options. The exchange is positioning it alongside spot and futures trading rather than as a separate venue, which matters because derivatives users often need collateral, margin and portfolio views in one account.
The launch follows a broader push by crypto exchanges into regulated derivatives infrastructure. Deribit, CME Group and Binance remain major options venues, while U.S.-focused platforms have been adding futures, perpetuals and options capabilities through licenses, acquisitions and partner channels.
The conservative read is that Kraken is not creating a new asset class. It is trying to reduce friction around a product category that already drives much of professional crypto risk management, but has been harder for casual or less specialized traders to use safely.
