Google Search AI Mode Adds App Connections
Google is extending AI Mode in Search with connected apps, a product update that turns some search results into a place to act on third-party services rather than only summarize information.
What Changed
The company says users can now link services directly to AI Mode and interact with them from inside Search. The initial examples named by Google are Instacart, Canva, and YouTube Music, covering shopping lists, design projects, and playlist curation.
Google frames the feature as a secure way to connect "go-to services" to AI Mode. The practical shift is that AI Mode can move from answering a query to helping assemble an output in another consumer app, while keeping the workflow anchored in Search results.
Why It Matters
The update is a small but clear step in Google's broader effort to make Search more agent-like. AI Mode, introduced as a Gemini-powered Search experience, already focuses on multi-step questions and synthesized answers. Connected apps add a transactional layer: users ask for something, then authorize Search to coordinate with another service.
The rollout also shows how large AI platforms are competing on distribution. Rather than requiring users to open a separate assistant or automation tool, Google is placing app actions in one of its highest-frequency surfaces.
The company has not listed a broad catalog of supported services yet, so the near-term impact will depend on how quickly additional integrations appear and how clearly users can control linked accounts.
