OpenAI says it has slowed some work on Astra, an unreleased model still in development, after internal reviews found progress in agentic coding and cybersecurity capabilities.

TechCrunch reported that OpenAI linked the move to its Preparedness Framework, which sets capability thresholds for frontier models before wider deployment. The company said the model reached a "critical cybersecurity threshold," meaning it could independently identify and carry out cyberattacks against traditionally well-protected real-world systems.

The company has not announced a public release date for Astra. The conservative read is that this is not a product delay with a new launch window, but a safety gate triggered during model development. OpenAI said it is adding security controls and additional evaluations before the affected work can proceed.
