OpenAI has expanded Daybreak, its limited-access cybersecurity program, into two tiers and introduced GPT-5.6-Cyber, a model aimed at approved defensive security work.

The new structure separates Daybreak Blue from Daybreak Red. Blue gives approved defenders access to frontier general-purpose models, including GPT-5.6 Sol, with safeguards adjusted for authorized security tasks such as secure code review, incident response, malware analysis, vulnerability discovery, and patch validation.

Daybreak Red is narrower and more sensitive. OpenAI says it provides access to purpose-trained cybersecurity models for authorized vulnerability research, exploit validation, and security testing. GPT-5.6-Cyber is available through that Red tier and is built on GPT-5.6 Sol, with training meant to improve some specialized cyber tasks and reduce refusals for certain high-risk, dual-use requests.

OpenAI said its internal Advanced Cybersecurity Completion Rate test showed GPT-5.6-Cyber completed 95.0% of advanced cyber requests, compared with 1.5% for GPT-5.6 Sol and 2.0% for Sol under Daybreak Blue access. The company framed the change as a way to give trusted defenders more capability before offensive AI use becomes more common.

The important caveat is access. This is not a broad ChatGPT release. TechCrunch reported that GPT-5.6-Cyber is being made available only to trusted customer partners, with enterprises and security vendors expected to be the initial audience.
