Alation Confirms Cyberattack After Cloud Incident
Alation has confirmed it is investigating a cyberattack after a short service incident affected a subset of its cloud customers earlier this week.
The enterprise data company told TechCrunch it had identified "an isolated incident involving unauthorized activity in one of its systems" and was conducting a thorough investigation. Alation did not disclose the attack method, whether customer data was accessed, or how many customers may have been affected.
The statement followed an August 18 status-page incident titled "Degraded availability for a subset of customers." Alation's status updates said the issue was identified at 16:35 UTC, a fix was implemented at 16:44 UTC, and the incident was resolved by 17:31 UTC after the company confirmed stability across the environment.
The incident is notable because Alation's software is used by large enterprises to catalog, search, and govern internal data. The company says its platform helps customers query data with natural language and has expanded its AI features as companies try to make fragmented corporate data more usable.
For now, the verified public record remains narrow. Alation has acknowledged unauthorized activity and a related investigation, while its status page confirms a brief availability issue for some customers. The company has not said that data was stolen, so any impact beyond the temporary service disruption remains unconfirmed.
