Outer Biosciences is starting to show how it plans to combine wet-lab biology with machine learning. The company, co-founded in 2022 by Michael Polansky, is building systems that keep donated human skin tissue alive outside the body long enough to observe controlled biological responses over time.

What changed

TechCrunch reported that Outer has spent years developing an AI and biology platform aimed at discovering new skincare compounds. Polansky told the publication that the company can keep tissue alive for up to a month and run experiments such as UVB exposure while tracking stress, inflammation, and recovery signals.

The most concrete public technical marker is a bioRxiv preprint from Outer-affiliated authors. It describes a long-term human skin platform that preserves native tissue architecture and epidermal, stromal, and immune-associated molecular programs for up to four weeks. The paper also discloses that the authors are Outer employees and/or equity holders.

Why it matters

The pitch is not simply that AI can screen ingredients. Outer is trying to generate richer, time-series biological data from human tissue before training models on it. That could make cosmetic and skin-health research less dependent on short-lived cell cultures, animal studies, or narrow endpoint assays.

The conservative read is that the company still has to prove commercial and scientific scale. But if its tissue platform holds up under outside scrutiny, it gives AI drug and ingredient discovery a more human-relevant data source than many early screening pipelines.
