Pentagon Expands Its AI Portal

The Pentagon has added two more commercial frontier AI systems to GenAI.mil, its internal generative AI platform for military and civilian personnel. OpenAI's ChatGPT Mil and Starshield AI's Grok for Government are now listed alongside existing AI capabilities on the portal, according to separate official releases published Monday.

Both systems are accredited for Controlled Unclassified Information at Impact Level 5, the level used for sensitive unclassified government data. The releases describe the tools as enterprise deployments for secure use rather than consumer chatbots plugged directly into defense networks.

ChatGPT Mil is aimed at document-heavy unclassified work across planning, policy, logistics, and administration. Its initial feature set centers on chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs, with additional functions planned over time. The Pentagon said the system is built to scale across more than 3 million department personnel.

Grok for Government adds a second new model provider to the same portal. The release says it includes deep-thinking inference, adaptive reasoning modes, customizable workspaces, persistent projects, and reusable playbooks for recurring institutional workflows.

The rollout is notable because it pushes the Pentagon further toward a multi-model AI environment, rather than a single-vendor stack. Officials framed the additions as part of a broader AI acceleration strategy led through the Chief Digital and AI Office and the research and engineering office.
