Standard Chartered Opens UAE Spot Crypto Trading
Standard Chartered has expanded institutional Bitcoin and Ether spot trading to the United Arab Emirates through its Dubai International Financial Centre branch, adding execution to a local digital asset custody business the bank launched in 2024.
The service is aimed at eligible institutional clients, not retail users. It lets clients trade deliverable BTC and ETH through the bank's existing electronic trading channels and familiar FX interfaces. Settlement can be routed to a custodian chosen by the client, including Standard Chartered's own UAE custody platform.
The bank says the launch makes it the first Global Systemically Important Bank to offer institutional digital asset spot trading in the UAE. That claim is notable because the product is spot execution inside a regulated banking channel, rather than a fund wrapper, derivative, or exchange partnership alone.
For Standard Chartered, the UAE rollout extends a model it first introduced through its UK branch in July 2025. It also deepens the bank's DIFC digital asset stack, which now spans custody, spot trading, collateral arrangements, and tokenization-related ventures through its broader institutional business.
The practical impact is narrower than a consumer crypto launch, but it matters for market structure. Large clients in the region can now use a traditional bank counterparty for crypto execution while separating trade routing from custody decisions, a setup that may appeal to asset managers, professional investors, and corporate treasury desks already operating across bank FX systems.
