Instacart Launches Clementine AI Grocery Assistant
Instacart introduced Clementine, an AI grocery shopping assistant, on September 9. The company says it is available to most customers in the United States and Canada through its app and website.
The assistant turns conversational requests, recipes, and grocery lists into personalized carts. Shoppers can ask for budget-friendly lunches, dinners for two, or a restock of their usual purchases instead of searching for every item individually.
From meal planning to a cart
According to Instacart, Clementine uses a customer's selected store, inventory information, stated preferences, and shopping history to assemble recommendations. It can generate recipes or surface publisher recipes, accommodate preferences such as vegetarian or gluten-free options, and suggest deals or lower-cost alternatives.
Customers can also upload a photograph of a handwritten grocery list or a screenshot of a digital one. The assistant converts that input into a list that can be added to a cart. The announced workflow prepares purchases; it does not establish that orders are placed without customer involvement.
The same technology reaches retailers
Instacart also announced that Food Bazaar, Heritage Grocers Group, and Woodman's are live with Cart Assistant, its separate white-label assistant for retailers' own websites and apps. That product combines a retailer's catalog and customer data with Instacart's grocery technology, with customization for branding, loyalty features, and recipes.
The launch extends conversational shopping beyond answering food questions into selecting purchasable products. Its practical distinction is the connection to store inventory and existing shopping preferences, although the announced capabilities are company claims rather than an independent assessment of accuracy or savings.
