Mistral launched Mistral Large 4 on October 6 as a public API preview, introducing a natively multimodal model with one trillion total parameters and 49 billion active parameters. Nicknamed “Le Chonk,” it is available through Mistral Studio, while downloadable weights are planned for the end of October.

The distinction matters: this is a hosted preview today, not an open-weight release that developers can already deploy themselves. TechCrunch independently reported the preview and planned weight release, citing Mistral science executive Pierre Stock.

Coding, agents and visual work

Mistral positions Large 4 for coding agents, tool-using business workflows and image understanding, alongside enterprise tasks in cybersecurity, finance and law. Its examples include inspecting engineering drawings, retrieving evidence from PDFs and analyzing satellite imagery.

The company reports competitive benchmark results across those areas, but its claims of leadership should be treated as vendor-reported findings rather than a settled ranking. The announcement says further architecture details, benchmarks and post-training methodology will accompany the weight release.

Testing before downloadable weights

Mistral says it is conducting real-world red-teaming with cybersecurity specialists, vetted partners and state authorities before releasing the weights. Those participants will receive access with reduced moderation and expanded cybersecurity capabilities.

The company says Large 4 was trained on its own European infrastructure, which also serves the preview. For developers evaluating the model, the immediate opportunity is API testing against their own coding, document and agent workloads. Self-hosting remains a future deployment option, contingent on the promised weight release and its accompanying technical details.
