Abstract is winding down its Ethereum layer-2 network and has set December 15, 2026 as the deadline for users to move their assets. Its official migration notice warns that anyone who misses that date will lose access to their funds.

The project says users can begin moving funds through its Migration Hub or native Abstract Bridge. The notice makes the deadline an immediate operational concern for wallet holders, rather than simply an announcement about the network's future direction.

Funding and adoption pressures

CoinDesk reports that Igloo, the company behind Pudgy Penguins, decided to close Abstract after spending tens of millions of dollars supporting it. CEO Luca Netz said the company could no longer justify funding the chain at the expense of its Pudgy Penguins business and chose not to raise more money by launching a token.

According to the report, Abstract cited stalled growth, thin trading markets, limited institutional activity and a small decentralized-finance market among the reasons for the decision. The network launched in January 2025 with a focus on consumer applications.

The shutdown also highlights the difference between activity on a blockchain and a sustainable business operating it. Application revenue does not automatically flow to the underlying network; transaction fees must still support its operating costs.

For users, the most concrete development is the published exit timetable. Abstract's own notice recommends migrating at the earliest convenience, making December 15 a cutoff to plan around rather than a date to wait for.
