Google outlined a tooling ecosystem around its Developer Knowledge API on October 7, connecting official documentation to terminal sessions, coding assistants, and application code. The package includes a gcloud command surface, an agent skill, client libraries, and an interactive API explorer.

The API provides search and retrieval across documentation for Google Cloud, Firebase, Android, and other Google products. Its purpose is to give development tools access to maintained technical material instead of relying solely on a model's training data or custom web scraping.

Documentation inside the workflow

The gcloud interface exposes answer-query for natural-language questions, documents search-chunks for locating relevant passages, and documents describe for retrieving a specific document. Google's CLI reference separately confirms grounded answer generation and document exploration.

For coding assistants, Google provides a skill that directs agents to search document chunks before fetching complete Markdown pages. It uses the Developer Knowledge MCP server, with a REST API fallback. That staged retrieval approach lets an agent select relevant material before loading whole documents into its context.

The client-library quickstart demonstrates the same distinction: AnswerQuery returns generated answers with citations and references, while SearchDocumentChunks returns passages and parent document identifiers. The guide requires enabling the API and configuring Application Default Credentials for library access.

The practical change is easier integration of documentation retrieval into existing development workflows. These interfaces supply source material and grounded responses; they do not establish that an assistant's resulting code is correct. Google describes reduced hallucinations as a benefit, but its announcement does not provide comparative accuracy measurements.
