Vercel announced general availability of Vercel Shop on October 16, releasing an open-source Next.js storefront template for Shopify that exposes shopping information and actions directly to AI agents. The company also said the rebuilt, framework-agnostic Hydrogen SDK is generally available.

The release separates readable product descriptions from live commerce operations. Product, collection and search pages can return structured Markdown when clients request text/markdown or append .md to a URL. Ordinary browser requests still receive HTML. A store-level /llms.txt file provides discovery guidance rather than duplicating the entire catalog.

Live inventory through commerce tools

According to the documentation, Markdown includes product-level information such as prices, options and availability. Live per-variant stock, catalog search, cart operations and checkout instead come from Shopify's Universal Commerce Protocol endpoints, forwarded through the merchant's domain at /.well-known/ucp and /api/ucp/mcp.

That distinction matters: an agent reading a product description still needs the commerce tools to check a particular variant and prepare a purchase. Vercel says agents can use MCP to search products, build carts and obtain checkout links without navigating the visual storefront.

The template also includes an Eve-powered shopping assistant that shares cart state with the browsing interface. Shopify supplies the commerce backend, while merchants can customize the storefront and assistant in the same codebase.

For developers, the concrete change is an available implementation combining agent discovery, structured content and shopping tools. It does not establish that agents reliably complete purchases or improve conversion; those outcomes still require evaluation in each merchant's deployment.
